Top Cities for Savvy Spenders

The struggling economic environment is an issue across the world, but why let this curtail your travel plans? There are some great alternative cities to visit, off the tourist trail and therefore cheaper than the favourite hotspots, so why not grab your passport and begin what could be the trip of a lifetime.



Vienna, Austria – Vienna is best appreciated in the months coming up to Christmas when the weather turns cold and the snow falls, or in the warmer months. At this time of year you can feast your eyes on some of the famous markets where stall holders offer meats, cheeses and beers for you to buy, and interesting little trinkets as Christmas presents for your loved ones. It's cheaper than Austria's counterparts, but still has all the trappings of a great city break.



Porto, Portugal – a great alternative to Lisbon, Porto gives a much more affordable alternative to other cities in Europe. The shops close here just after midnight, so it really is a cosmopolitan city that hustles and bustles right into the night and it's not far from Alto Douro, a popular haunt, and one of the world's oldest wine districts. Porto has a far more boutiquey feel than Lisbon and still retains the chic feel rather than being too spoilt by visitors.



Palma, Spain – favoured by the Spanish royals, Palma is distinctly cheaper than Barcelona, but still has ample sights for you to sink your teeth into. See the heady mix of old and new in the architecture, and shop till you drop. If you crave extensive architecture then you might be slightly disappointed in comparison to Barcelona, but it still offers a great trip.



Krakow, Poland – a lot of world travellers are reminded of Prague thirty years previous when they visit Krakow and it has some beautiful scenery and picturesque little Plazas. Winter is a great time to visit when the temperatures drop and the snow makes it really picturesque. Chocolate box houses are dusted with white and the photo opportunities are endless.
