Five questions Friday

As I'm trying to post these with a similar theme, this weeks questions are focused on personal style.

1. When did you develop your sense of style? How did you dress in high school/as a teen?

I never really had that much attachment to clothes growing up. I'd throw on anything my mom had bought for me and that was that. I wore alot of jeans and shorts. I saved the dresses for special occasions, and even those were chosen by mom.
In high-school I dressed like a boy. O.k, not that I tried to but I was really into snowboarding so I just really wore whatever was comfortable but always kept it a little edgy/punk/emo. Roxy, Billabong, Volcom, DCShoes, Etnies, all of those brands made their way into my closet.

I also discovered Value Village when I was about 15 years old. It must've been 15 because I remember having to take the bus and I got my driver's license when I was 16. I loved to spend hours at that store just going through the racks and finding some pretty amazing stuff. I think all those years of thrifting have helped develop an eye for picking out the gems I find now.

It wasn't until I moved to Vancouver and started working at kensie that I really felt a "want" to wear dresses everyday. So that's exactly what I set out to do. Which pretty much brings me to my style now. Lots of dresses and skirts, minimal pants.

2. What are your 5 basic pieces that you believe should be in everyone's closet?

- black leggings
- AA deep v neck tee (blk/white/grey)
- Black skirt (much more important than a LBD)
- Red cardigan ( I want to wear mine everyday)
- Denim jacket

When you think about it, all these pieces together can be a pretty great "go to" outfit.

3. What is your favorite piece in your wardrobe and why?

This is an extremely hard question.I think I paced back and forth to my closet (and all other areas of my apratment that currently house clothing) about 3 times now. I can't pick just one so I'm going to cheat:

My parka, because it always keeps me warm.

My denim jacket, because it goes with everything.

4. How do your clothes always seem to fit you so perfectly? Could you offer tips on clothes fitting well?

Well, first of all, thank you! Umm, how do I say this without sounding full of myself?? I don't have any body issues. I know sometimes I complain about my thighs and I think i've mentioned that my bum could be a little smaller but honestly I don't really have a "problem area". Which I think is the reason why I can find some good thrifted/vintage items easily.
As for tips:
- invest in a sewing machine. anytime something could be just a little shorter or a little more fitted, I whip out the sewing machine and take it in. this saves me alot of money from having to go to a tailor all the time, even though sometimes its not perfect. I saw a very basic sewing machine at UO the other day, just an fyi.

- be creative. think outside the box when it comes to wearing something. the other day when I need a cute fitted black shirt to wear over a dress? I didn't have one but I took a plain old shirt, bunched it together and tied it at my waist to create the look that I wanted.

-pay no attention to size labels. I see so many girls trying to squeeze into something that is so obviously not their size. I've also seen some ill fitting pieces on petite girls that don't take the hem up on their skirts/pants. Just because in your head your a certain size, doesn't mean  that with this particular brand you'll be the same. I've brought home skirts from Value Village with a size 12 tag. does it matter? nope, do they fit? yes.

5. Do you think there is such a thing as age appropriate/location appropriate outfits?

Yes. I know... I know age shouldn't matter and you should wear whatever it is you want, but lets be honest here; unless you have the thickest skin out there, wear something that is out of the ordinary in a small town and you're going to have to face the consenquences. Same for age appropriate, try getting people to take you seriously when all you want to wear is the color pink.

Location appropriate: When I'm packing for a trip, I always have in mind the destination: If I'm visiting my family, I think o.k, go basic, even though my basic is far from my sister's or anyone in my family at least I'll be comfortable and still stay true to my style. If you want to dress up and live in a small town go with one statement piece and incorporate it with other staples. Like colored tights with neutral and a pair of boots.

Age appropriate: I've been struggling with this one myself. Personally, I don't like to show alot of skin. Thats something to keep in mind as you get older. Showing alot of skin is not necessary. So choose what your best asset is and flaunt that (not everything). I also think that a simple beauty routine also comes into effect here. I try to keep it basic as to not look so overdone all the time. If you want to wear something fun, try colored tights in a rich color, like instead of a grape purple, go for more of an eggplant. Instead of bright blue tights, go for a navy.

Alright there you go guys, this weeks round of questions. As always, please feel free to email me if you need any clarification on any of these! And also, don't be offended by anything I say. I'm just a girl like any other offering up my own personally advice as to what works for me.

Have a great weekend!
